Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Muxima

Angola's biggest pilgrimage site

Muxima is a small town in the province of Bengo. The small town is considered the most important place of pilgrimage of Angola, even before Libolo. The Catholic Church “Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Muxima” is the destination of the pilgrims.

Every year on August 31 and September 1, over one million people visit the Muxima. The church depicts the depiction of the Virgin Mary.

Since 1833, after a suspected Marian apparition, Muxima is the most important place of pilgrimage of Angola and the adjacent areas. In 1924, the church was listed as a historical monument and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on November 22, 1996, in the Cultural category.

Historical monument

As well as the church, the “Fort Muxima” was also classified as a national monument in 1924. In addition, the historic center of Muxima as a whole, is one of the state-registered monuments of Angola.

Muxima was also an important empire of slave traffic, protected by the Fortress. The church played an important role in the materialization of the traffic, because it was in this religious local, where the slaves were baptized before being deported.

The bustling small market in front of the church, which provides the pilgrims with food, as well as the river Cuanza are no less worth seeing than the large monuments.
