History and culture

Bié Province presents a blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and historical significance, making it an intriguing destination for tourists seeking a well-rounded exploration of Angola’s central region.
 
The province, and its capital Kuito, became a focal point for military operations and witnessed intense fighting. Today, remnants of the war, such as war memorials and historical sites, serve as reminders of the province’s tumultuous past. The region has since undergone reconstruction and development efforts as Angola emerged from the civil war, symbolizing resilience and progress.
 
Visit also the Mount Moco. With it’s more than over 200 birds species, and is becoming a high recommend birding hotspot. Birds like Margaret´s batis, Schwalow´s turaco, grey apalis, dusky twinspot and many others can be seen there.

Visit the house of the former UNITA president Jonas Malheiro Savimbi and learn about the importance of this region in the Angolan civil war.

You will have the honor to meet the king of the Mbalundo. Bailundo was the 1st capital of the Huambo kingdom and the traditions still exist. Eywitness different ceremonial acts and traditional dances during your stay.

Mount Moco (Morro do Moco) with its 2602 is Angolas highest peak and famous for the many bird species living there.

The Ovimbundu belong to the Bantu people, and delving into their culture will not only provide insights into the Ovimbundu but also shed light on other tribes in the region, including the smaller Tcho-kwe, Ganguela, and Lwimbi groups.
