BAIA DOS TIGRES

ANGOLA'S MOST ISOLATED PLACE

A ghost town like no other

An unreal place

Welcome to Ilha dos Tigres, a truly unique and atmospheric destination with a captivating history waiting to be discovered. Your journey begins in Moçâmedes, where you’ll embark on an expedition to this remote island, located approximately 20 miles off Angola’s southern coast, in the part of the Namib Desert that belongs to Angola.

Ilha dos Tigres, or “Tiger Island,” earned its name from the stripes in the yellow sand, created by shadows or darker soil. Despite the name, there are no tigers in Africa; it’s a metaphorical association with the island’s landscape. The heart of the island used to be São Martinho dos Tigres, a fishing and fish processing town that thrived until a violent storm in 1962 severed its connection to the mainland, making it untenable.

The town’s demise marked the beginning of its abandonment, and since then, Ilha dos Tigres has become a ghost town, almost forgotten in the vastness of the Namib Desert. The ruins of São Martinho dos Tigres, including an abandoned cathedral, now stand as silent witnesses to the once-thriving community.

A once-in-a-lifetime journey

The trip to Baía dos Tigres can only be undertaken at low tide, with a convoy of sturdy 4x4s navigating the coastal drive, flanked by desert dunes on one side and the vast Atlantic Ocean on the other. A boat ride is necessary to cross from the mainland to the island.

Despite the lack of facilities on the island, there are adventure tour operators that occasionally take visitors on this expedition, ensuring relative safety and providing all necessary equipment and supplies. The journey promises a serious adventure, but the reward is a breathtaking and atmospheric experience, highlighted by the unlikely sight of a cathedral in the desert.

Ilha dos Tigres is a place frozen in time, with remnants of the past, including fish-processing buildings and houses for the management staff, contributing to its unique charm. Explore the desolate beauty and capture unforgettable moments in this deserted island town, where history and nature converge to create an unforgettable experience.
